True Antique Roses

What are the True Antique Roses?

True antiques, or Old Garden roses, are the roses that were around before the introduction of the first Hybrid Tea Rose in 1867, 'La France.' This marked the beginning of the Modern Rose Era.

Old Garden Roses are known for their hardiness, disease resistance, and generally speaking, their vigorous growth. Most of the roses in this collection are Teas, Chinas, and species roses that have proven to withstand the test of time.

5 to 8 foot shrub or 10 to 15 foot climber

Z5-11 O Fr lp

Known as the "Sweet Briar Rose" because of the strongly apple-scented leaves, this is a favorite English native that has been recorded in literature from Chaucer to Shakespeare. R. eglanteria, or 'Eglanteria', has been common in cottage gardens on both sides of the Atlantic because it is not only hardy but always fragrant, whether or not it is in bloom. The rambling shrub is large, thorny, and vigorous with dark green, slightly rough foliage. Spring flowers are pink with five petals and have a good rose fragrance of their own. R. eglanteria should be part of every fragrance garden. Rain, wind and sun all seem to bring out the perfume of the plant. If supported as a climber, it could reach 10 to 15 feet.

8 to 12 feet   Z4-11 O Fr m

Dark purple roses with a lilac-pink reverse fading even darker with age makes 'William Lobb' an interesting addition to floral arrangements or potpourri. Large semi-double flowers open from well "mossed" buds on a very prickly bush. As a garden plant it is well suited for training on a pillar.
