‘Basye’s Purple Rose’ is a truly distinctive shrub rose that stands out in both color and character. Its large, single blooms of velvety fuchsia-magenta are highlighted with brilliant golden stamens; an eye-catching display that repeats in flushes throughout the growing season. The flowers carry a very light, fruity fragrance and open to an average of 2.5" in diameter with 4–8 petals, creating a simple yet strikingly elegant effect.

This rose forms a tall, vigorous, and upright shrub, often reaching up to 8 feet high and 5 feet wide. Its canes are exceptionally woody and tree-like, a unique trait that sets it apart from many modern shrubs. These canes may even appear dead during dormancy, but rest assured that this is simply part of its unusual growth habit and not a sign of decline.

A cross between Rosa rugosa and Rosa foliolosa, this rose is ruggedly hardy, heat tolerant, and well-suited for challenging climates. Its rough-textured foliage and prickly canes add to its durability, while its tendency to sucker on its own roots makes it a strong, enduring presence in the landscape.

Bred in 1968 by Dr. Robert E. Basye, this rose is as much a conversation piece as it is a garden beauty, perfect for those who appreciate roses with bold personality and natural charm.
