This healthy climber, a repeat blooming sport of 'Dr. W. Van Fleet', bears long, full-pointed buds which are soft pink and fade to blush-cream as the flower opens fully. Teddy Roosevelt made 'Duchesse de Brabant' his favorite, often wearing a bud or flower as a boutonniere. It is very nearly our greatest favorite, too. The cupped pink flowers have a cabbagey roundness to them, as if they were picked from a luscious old rose painting.

Perfectly shaped, little pink buds earned 'Cecile Brunner' its nickname, "The Sweetheart Rose." It is a treasure and should be in every garden where it will bloom from mid-Spring until frost. The bush form remains compact, putting up sprays of lightly fragrant flowers that look like tiny, high-centered Hybrid Teas. Long-lived and healthy, 'Cecile Brunner' tolerates everything from poor soil to partial shade.

This most interesting rose was once sold as ‘Tipo Ideale’, and it is ideally suited to illustrate the typical China trait of darkening with age, instead of fading. Nowhere is that trait more visible than in the flowers of ‘Mutabilis’, whose single petals open sulfur yellow, changing through orange to a rich pink and finally crimson. Bright, silky flowers of all these colors will often be on display at the same time, looking as if a group of multi-colored butterflies has settled on the bush. This aspect earned ‘Mutabilis’ its common name–"The Butterfly Rose". A healthy, well-branched shrub, ‘Mutabilis’ will easily grow to 6 feet, making a fine specimen plant whose showy flowers are accented by the bronze color of the new growth. This is a very popular rose due to its distinct coloration.

'Climbing Pinkie' is one of our favorite roses for use in many garden niches. The nearly thornless canes are easy to work with when training it as a climber (8 to 12 feet), but it will also grow without support as a graceful, cascading shrub. Once established, it is very difficult to catch this rose out of bloom and the flushes of scented, semi-double flowers simply smother the bush in bright rose pink. One plant on each side of your gate or driveway will turn your yard into a traffic hazard.

'The Fairy' has a lush, spreading shape that will soften any angle. The small, bright green, shiny leaves and the clustered sprays of little, very double pink roses are on display throughout the growing season, although Summer sun fades the flowers to blush white. Massed to create a statement or allowed to gracefully cascade over the edge of flower beds, this rose will be treasured for its versatility. This is one of the best summer blooming roses.

We discovered our favorite found rose "Katy Road Pink" was in fact 'Carefree Beauty.' Forming an open, but extremely graceful bush, 'Carefree Beauty' appears to have few insect or disease problems and is not particular about soil or growing conditions. It is free blooming, probably one of the most floriferous pink roses that we grow, with new buds appearing all the time. Large hips are a nice treat!

Regarded as the only white China rose, ‘Ducher’ blooms a soft ivory-white for us. The buds are very round and sometimes have a hint of pink on the outer petals opening to a delicate swirl of fragrant ivory petals. Smaller than many Chinas, this is a good candidate for a container. Although it exhibits the typical bronzy new growth, the foliage of ‘Ducher’ is uncharacteristically light green.

This everblooming rose, "Caldwell Pink", is one of the most popular roses with landscape designers in our area. Its double, lilac-pink flowers form clusters that can be seen at a distance, and the compact bush fills out nicely with a minimum of pruning and maintenance. It is not very particular about soil conditions but prefers a sunny open space. Some rosarians have suggested that this is the old China rose, ‘Pink Pet’, but we feel that it shows traces of wichuraiana or multiflora heritage and fits more naturally in the Polyantha class. The study name comes from a neighboring town, Caldwell, Texas, where this rose was found.

A member of our staff attests that "this is the very best Tea rose I have grown. It blooms almost constantly." The fragrant flowers are Camellia-like shaped and vary in shades of pink which fade to a cream. The bush is rather full and rounded for a Tea and is very easy to grow. 'Madame Antoine Mari' was named for the wife of the breeder so we suspect it was the best in his collection.

'Marie Daly' is one of the best white Polyanthas out there, and an Earth-Kind® rose no less. Originating as a sport of 'Marie Pavié', you would think there wouldn’t be much difference, between the two. Surprisingly though, 'Marie Daly' is much more disease resistant and a better overall rose.

'Sea Foam' can be grown as a mannerly climber or, because of its semi-prostrate habit, can be grown as a trailer. The choice is yours. Double, creamy-white flowers of slight fragrance handsomely decorate the dark, glossy foliage of this vigorous rose. A perfect candidate for a white garden because the lovely blooms reflect light well at night.

The perfect hedge plant, 'La Marne' is a neat, erect bush heavily covered with healthy, shiny leaves which reblooms heavily. The flowers are borne in loose clusters of open pink and white cups that are showy and attractive at close range or at a distance. 'La Marne' prefers open, sunny areas with good air circulation.

French for "dream of gold", this lovely, graceful climber lives up to its name with ease. It is especially recommended for use on porch pillars, where the pendulous, globular flowers can be seen and appreciated more easily. Once trained up and established ‘Rêve d’Or’ will display for its admirers a wealth of large, loosely double, buff yellow roses with a rich Noisette perfume. It blooms all season, but we enjoy its fall performance best.

"Spice" is another rose that some believe to be the true ‘Hume’s Tea Scented China.’ Right or wrong this rose produces the palest of pink, tea-like blooms on a 3 to 4 foot thick bush. The plant is twiggy in growth, more like our China roses and can mildew a little in the early spring. The flowers are good for cutting and have an unusual fragrance that probably earned it its name.

Dr. William C. Welch brought us this lovely rose from Georgetown, Texas. The flower is long-budded and fully double, dark salmon pink at the center fading to lilac pink. The petals of "Georgetown Tea" roll into points at the tips as they unfold, giving the fully open flower a starry look. The blooms have typical Tea fragrance, and the foliage is extra thick and attractive.

'Else Poulsen' is a compact rose attaining a best-kept height of four feet. The single, rose-pink flowers occur often in clusters throughout the growing season. This rose performs very well in containers. Qualities like disease resistance and garden performance have earned this rose the status of EarthKind®. Of the four Poulsen roses bred by the Danish Poulsen brothers, Else (pink) and Kirsten (red) have proven to be the most popular.
