This rose shows very little from its parentage ('Carefree Beauty', 'Basye Blueberry' and 'Altissimo') save for the bright red flowers it gets from 'Altissimo'. Foliage is very thick on bushy plants that can reach four feet. The flowers are single and plentiful. This rose reminds us of a red 'Mutabilis'.

The found rose, "Bailey Red" comes to us from Holly Springs, North Carolina via the Heritage Rose Foundation president, Charles Walker. The clusters of single red flowers are set off by the yellow stamens of this six foot plant. It is thought to be a relatively modern Floribunda or Hybrid Tea, but regardless of its class, it has proven to be a very rewarding garden plant.

This seedling of ‘Kirsten Poulsen’ displays bright, bicolored pink single roses which are produced in large clusters. This rose bush is extremely popular in the North due to its cold hardiness and prolific blooming habit. We like its upright and bushy growth. When it is in bloom, which is frequent for us, it is a real eye-catcher. Mass plantings of ‘Kirsten Poulsen’ and ‘Betty Prior’ are breathtaking.

This everblooming rose, "Caldwell Pink", is one of the most popular roses with landscape designers in our area. Its double, lilac-pink flowers form clusters that can be seen at a distance, and the compact bush fills out nicely with a minimum of pruning and maintenance. It is not very particular about soil conditions, but prefers a sunny open space. Some rosarians have suggested that this is the old China rose, ‘Pink Pet’, but we feel that it shows traces of wichuraiana or multiflora heritage and fits more naturally in the Polyantha class. The study name comes from a neighboring town, Caldwell, Texas, where this rose was found.

Perfectly shaped, little pink buds earned 'Cecile Brunner' its nickname, "The Sweetheart Rose." It is a treasure and should be in every garden where it will bloom from mid-Spring until frost. The bush form remains compact, putting up sprays of lightly fragrant flowers that look like tiny, high-centered Hybrid Teas. Long lived and healthy, 'Cecile Brunner' tolerates everything from poor soil to partial shade.

This rose was one of the first roses to be involved in the promotional marketing of a consumer product, the Chrysler Imperial car. We can only hope those car owners enjoyed their Chrysler Imperial as much as we love ours! Lovely, long pointed buds open to globular flowers of dark velvety red. The 4-5 inch blooms contain a strong citrus scent .'Chrysler Imperial' blooms are a must in any of our flower arrangements as we enjoy the striking color and the heavenly fragrance. The bush is nicely shaped with semi-glossy foliage.

‘Clotilde Soupert’ reminds us of the Bourbon rose, ‘Souvenir de la Malmaison,’ only smaller. The flower is a rounded, cabbagey rose of creamy white with the very palest touches of pink in the center of its 100 petals which enfold its fine perfume. The compact growth habit and exquisite bloom make up for the tendency to ball in humid weather.

‘Peace’ crossed with ‘Independence’ produced this cherry red rose with the old-fashioned name. We are not sure why 'Dame de Coeur' dropped out of commerce, as it is healthy and free-blooming with large, double, very fragrant flowers that last well on the bush and in vases. The color is strong but mixes quite well in the landscape with older varieties of roses. This rose is also known as "The Black Rose," as the cherry red coloration darkens to a crimson as it ages.

Regarded as the only white China rose, ‘Ducher’ blooms a soft ivory-white for us. The buds are very round and sometimes have a hint of pink on the outer petals opening to a delicate swirl of fragrant ivory petals. Smaller than many Chinas, this is a good candidate for a container. Although it exhibits the typical bronzy new growth, the foliage of ‘Ducher’ is uncharacteristically light green.

Colors change in intensity due to seasonal temperatures. Leaves are uniquely curved giving the plant added texture. Believed by some authorities to be a cross between China and multifora, ‘Fellenberg’ is now taking its place as one of the very few red Noisettes. It is very free flowering, with clusters of loose, rosy scarlet blooms. Healthy foliage decorates a plant of spreading habit and it is best used as a shrub or container rose. The autumn color is especially good, as the rose blooms take on a scarlet hue.
