This rose well illustrates the effect environment can have, as well as the vagaries of the observer. Peter Beales of England observes that 'Duke of Edinburgh' is "shortish in stature and slightly spreading in habit." By way of contrast, Trevor Griffiths of New Zealand admires it as "an upright tall, attractive plant." Here in Texas, we have observed the plant to be moderate in growth, sturdy in habit, and lovely in bloom. We should add that all agree that this rose is extremely fragrant.

Rather like an old Tea in form, ‘Emily’ has a full leafy bush decorated with very large (5 to 6 inches), very double (40 petals) high centered roses of a soft pastel pink. Fragrant and lovely.

The very double flowers of 'Enchantress' are dark rose-pink that fade to near crimson, with just a touch of bright yellow hidden at the petal’s base. The bush is sturdy and upright, with full, neatly shaped foliage. The freely-produced flowers have a pleasant, cool fragrance that makes an interesting contrast with the warm color. It is said that the color of this rose is "enchanting."

Silvery pink, very double blooms of 'Enfant de France' contains an excellent fragrance. The bush seldom reaches three feet at our nursery making it ideal for gardens with limited space. Because of its rather small size, this rose can be kept very full retaining the traditional upright habit of all Hybrid Perpetuals.

Marketed in the past as "Rustler’s Skyrocket" we have finally concluded that this rose is in fact the Floribunda, ‘Eutin’. Huge dark red clusters of up to 50 flowers cover a chunky shrub. It is a real show stopper when cared for and a real survivor in any condition.

This rose is an excellent addition to out selections of Polyanthas. Its clustered flowers are dark carmine rose and are fully double, very much like 'Gabrielle Privat.' Its growing habit, on the other hand, is more open and cascading and its flowers have a light, musky scent. 'Excellenz von Schubert' makes a lovely container rose or specimen in the front of a border planting.

Classified as a Centifolia or Cabbage Rose, the original name, date, and breeding of ‘Fantin-Latour’ are unknown. Its blush pink blossoms open flat to display a swirl of petals, after the fashion of roses painted by the French artist whose name it now bears. Centifolias, in fact, were known as "the rose of the painters", and their full, sweet shapes can be identified in many a flower study from the last several centuries. ‘Fantin-Latour’ blooms in the spring on a hardy bush with lovely green leaves and few prickles.

Though classified as a Hybrid Perpetual, one rose authority calls ‘Ferdinand Pichard’ "the last of the Bourbon race." A very unique flower, it is described as a pale blush striped crimson in a cupped, double bloom. The foliage is a pale lettuce green and the bloom has a very sweet scent. Striped and mottled roses might sound quite vulgar, but "in person" they are very attractive and desirable.

For many years, 'Frau Karl Druschki was the most popular white rose in existence, in spite of the lack of scent. The pure white flowers are large and globular, opening from high-pointed buds, and are lovely both on the bush and in a bouquet. Over the years this rose has been known by several descriptive names, including 'Snow Queen' and 'White American Beauty.'

'Fuego de Amore' offers wonderful qualities of fragrance (very strong citrus),  multicolored flowers as well as hardiness making it an asset in any garden.  The shrub itself is large enough to create a hedge or can be used singly as a specimen.

It is rather ironic that this hardy and easy to grow rose is not very well known and absent from most gardens. 'G. Nabonnand's' delicate flowers are large, semi-double and lovely in color. A salmon pink washed with yellow gives us the impression of apricot watered silk. The fragrance is really special and though the bush is somewhat open, being thornless is a great compensation.

The prototype of the Hybrid Perpetual class and the first long stemmed florists’ rose, ‘General Jacqueminot’ has shapely, very fragrant flowers of dark red with a whitish reverse. The sturdy blooms appear to advantage on a vigorous, erect bush with rich green foliage.

This lovely old Tea has very double, fragrant flowers of copper-red shaded with cherry that open from rather long buds to nearly flats. A sturdy plant with plenty of foliage,' General Schablikine' is ideally suited for hedging or as a specimen.

Dr. William C. Welch brought us this lovely rose from Georgetown, Texas. The flower is long-budded and fully double, dark salmon pink at the center fading to lilac pink. The petals of "Georgetown Tea" roll into points at the tips as they unfold, giving the fully open flower a starry look. The blooms have typical Tea fragrance, and the foliage is extra thick and attractive.

Gideon Lincecum's' best quality is its very dark foliage that acts as a foil to its single white flowers. Plants attain heights to six feet but are very bushy and thick. Few thorns and lots of hips make it even more attractive. This rose was named after Gideon Lincecum, a 1800's plant collector.

‘Gipsy Boy’ or ‘Zigeunerknabe’ is reported to be a ‘Russelliana’ seedling and has the coarse healthy foliage of its parent. The flowers, produced mainly in the spring and fall, are double, dark crimson with gold stamens. Perhaps the colorful appearance of the blooms dancing all along the canes is what inspired its name. The fragrance is rich and satisfying and the bush has the graceful arching habit of ‘Russelliana’, but on a smaller scale.

There are many uses for this rose that produces large (three-inch size) flowers of pink and orange. 'Gold Blush' can be placed in the back of the border where the canes can fall over themselves, or on a small trellis or fence, or finally left as a large specimen plant. Wherever it is placed it is sure to enhance that location.

We can find little information on this lovely rose that Siegfried Hahn acquired from Petersen’s nursery in Denmark and shared with us. It is one of the most remontant Hybrid Perpetuals we grow, compact and healthy of bush, with dark, velvety-crimson double flowers that open to show golden stamens and a few streaks of white. The perfume of "Granny Gimmetts" is spicy and powerful.

This rose with long, flexible canes and rounded green leaves produces masses of flat, quartered purplish-maroon roses from late spring well into summer. As with most Bourbons, 'Great Western' may surprise you with some later flowers at scattered intervals. Well scented and luscious in arrangements; be sure to bring these blooms indoors to enjoy.

'Gypsy Sue' is a very vigorous, upright shrub to six feet. Her vigor is in contrast to the delicate, Tea-like flowers of soft tones of apricot. The flowers are very double and fragrant. This rose is named after a benefactor of the Reeves Reed Arboretum.

This crimson colored rose is a prolific spring bloomer. The flowers of 'Henri Martin' are fragrant and emerge from moss covered buds. The foliage is outstanding - darker and more dense than most of our European collection. Heat tolerance should be of no concern, as it tolerates our Texas summer heat nicely.
